VR Car Driving Simulation
This was my first digital game project, where I was the only designer on the team, and I had to handle various design disciplines:
Designing game ranking and objectives systems, overseeing game testing, collaborating on issue resolution, managing cross-team communications, participating in UX wireframes, creating school level layouts, and placing some environmental props.
Challenge
KSA government lifted their ban on female drivers in 2018, opening the door to driving a car and granting them a driving license after passing through the driving test, where they needed a safe simulated environment for their city & driving school to prepare players for the real test.
Gameplay
Players begin their driving education by completing a series of carefully crafted missions, each focusing on different aspects of driving, As they progress, they earn level scores based on their performance in fulfilling the mission objectives and unlock access to an open city, where they can put their acquired driving skills to the test. Practice their driving techniques, and experience various real-world scenarios, all within a risk-free environment.
Hardware
To ensure a truly immersive experience, this Driving Simulation is designed to be played on a PC with a VR headset, and for a heightened sense of realism, players also use a custom-made car-driving hydraulic simulator, which further enhances the sensation of driving a real car.
Responsibilities
◈ Regular communication with the creative director to discuss their feedback and inputs, and iterate on the related design.
◈ Collaborated with developers and artists to ensure a successful implementation of the intended design.
◈ Took charge of the playtesting process from game testing and findings reporting till resolving identified bugs or issues with the dev team.
◈ Regular communication with the account manager to ensure the game design aligns with the client's objectives.
◈ Designed the game objectives and ranking system including players' achievements vs gameplay performance data metrics.
◈ Involved in designing the game's UX wireframes.
◈ Took charge of some level design tasks like; level layout, environment placements and objective system content.
◈ High-level design of the city map and school levels to provide a logical (reality-based) engaging progression curve.
Conclusion
The game's core loop revolves around skill development, progress tracking, and rewarding. As players collect rank trophies and achieve higher levels of proficiency, they unlock more challenging missions and gain access to additional free-driving cities, providing a sense of accomplishment and motivation to continually improve.
